The Street of Birds and Shadows

The Street of Birds and Shadows is a unique public art project on Ella Street, created by residents in partnership with ESRA (Ella Street Residents Association).

Launched in 2012 with artist Martin Heron, the project brings together permanent artworks and community-created pieces that celebrate the street’s history, wildlife, and identity. Birds, both permanent and migratory, share our space and stories — and through these artworks, we honour their presence and the rich tapestry of life on Ella Street. It’s a celebration of people, place, and the shadows that connect us all.

The Street of Birds and Shadows

In 2013, the Street of Birds and Shadows project was beautifully captured in a stunning book designed by Chris Cannon. The book details the background of the project, the creative process, and the resident engagement that brought it to life. It also includes a map of the trail, guiding you to each artwork along Ella Street and offering insight into the community collaboration behind them.
